What is RBSMUN?
Since its genesis in 2005, Rato Bangala School Model United Nations (RBSMUN)has been a consistent platform for enthusiastic students from Nepal and beyond to strategize, discover, and grow. Our principal, Miss Milan Dixit, organized the first-ever RBSMUN with the belief that bringing Model UN to Rato Bangala School and Nepal would enable students to grow, intellectually, socially, and cognitively. Since then, RBS has held its MUN annually and become one of the most prestigious MUN conferences in the country. It has evolved from an in-school activity to an interschool conference, and, more recently, with its promise of high calibre deliberation and negotiation to an international conference.
During Model UN conferences, students transcend the four walls of classrooms and the finite pages of books. Serving as the diplomats of countries from all over the world, students tackle complex real-world issues ranging from regional conflicts to environmental problems, and, in the process, develop an invaluable understanding of events that shape our world.
Over the years, RBSMUN has created generations of thoughtful citizens who care about people’s sufferings and care enough to take steps towards a shared future of peace. This year, we hope to continue fostering our precedent: inspiring change. Providing a place for ardent delegates to develop their passions and to share their ideas, we strive to change the status quo. Believing that having a good future requires grooming knowledgeable and dutiful global citizens, RBSMUN provides an opportunity to learn about historic, current, and futuristic world events; to understand their causes, dimensions, and implications; to build a well-informed opinion about the current state of political, economic, natural, and social affairs; to articulate those stances; to persuade; and to galvanise change for all.
Each year, we host a new group of debaters who, at the end of the conference, emerge intrigued, impassioned, and ready to take the reins of the world in their hands. In this iteration of RBSMUN, we will continue our tradition of excellence, inspiration to growth, and enlightenment of perspective. "It is my pleasure to welcome you to the twenty-first edition of the Rato Bangala School Model United Nations. This student-led conference provides an exceptional platform for thoughtful dialogue, diplomacy, and engagement with both local and global issues.
At its core, Model United Nations promotes the ideals of peace, justice, human rights, and responsible leadership. Through research, negotiation, and debate, delegates strengthen their critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our interconnected world.
This year's theme selected by the organising students, Unity and Inclusion in a Fragmented World, is both timely and relevant. It encourages delegates to explore how cooperation, empathy, and inclusive leadership can help address the divisions and complexities of our time.
The fifteen committees reflect this spirit through a diverse range of stimulating topics, from cyber warfare and state accountability to sovereign debt and the future of global finance. The International Press Corps will explore the balance between press freedom, government transparency, and national security, while the Nepal-focused House of Representatives will bring valuable local relevance to the conference by debating issues ranging from government accountability and budget allocations to foreign policy and beyond. Alongside these contemporary discussions, delegates will also participate in historical and imaginative simulations, challenging them to think creatively, adapt to complex scenarios, and engage with perspectives beyond their own.
Since its inception in 2005, RBSMUN has earned a reputation for excellence through the quality and diversity of its committees and debates. I am confident that this year's organising team will continue that proud tradition led by Pragyam Gautam as Secretary General, Ruhaan Bhatta and Raavya Shrestha as Deputy-Secretary Generals, and Prasiddha Mainali as Crisis Director.
To all delegates—from Rato Bangala School and schools across Nepal and beyond—I extend a warm welcome. I encourage you to participate with curiosity, integrity, and respect, to listen as carefully as you speak, and to approach every challenge with an open mind.
